There are certain things every college student needs before they begin their college career. One of those things, unfortunately is a computer, preferably a laptop. There are options out there for college students that are inexpensive and still have all the things they need to write those lengthy term papers. I know my laptop has had a positive experience on my college career and I bought it for $700. I have an HP Pavillion dv6000 equipped with the new Windows Vista. From my point of view Vista takes some getting used to. Some say it’s Windows way of acting like a Mac, but it is neater and more efficient in some ways, while being slower in others. Well enough about my computer. When shopping for a laptop for school you should look for dual core processor. To go along with this processor you’ll need plenty of memory, at least “1GB system RAM”, and “Microsoft’s new Vista OS” which comes out next year (Cheng). Portability is also another issue you’ll need to consider the best screen size for the best portability is the 15.4″ or the smaller 14.1″.

Here’s several others that won’t empty your parents pockets. The Dell Vostro 1000 is priced at $349 and comes with “AMD Sempron Processor at 3600+, 15.4-inch screen, a DVD/CD-RW combo drive, 512MB DDR2 RAM, 80GB hard drive, Wi-Fi (b/g) and Windows Vista Home Basic” (Yoon). Now this computer isn’t optimal for photo/video editing and anything else that requires heavy processing but for this price it is well worth the buy for the price conscious consumer.

The next computer at $438 is the Acer Aspire 5315 which comes equipped with “Intel Celeron processor at 1.86GHZ, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, 160GB hard drive, DVD reader/CD writer, 15.4-inch screen, Wi-Fi (b/g), and Windows Vista Home Basic” (Yoon). The most expensive computer within this group is the HP Pavillion dv9910us at $699 after the mail in rebate and comes with a 17″ screen great for viewing movies or even watching TV. This laptop is also equipped with an “AMD Turion X2 processor running at 2.0GHZ, 3GB of DDR2 RAM, 250GB hard drive, DVD burner with LightScribe, and a built in webcam” (Yoon). This last computer is the most similar to my own, which I am not ashamed to admit I bought for entertainment purposes mainly.

Another but more expensive option is Apple’s Macbook 13″ which is becoming the most popular computer among college students today and will cost you a whopping $1,099, but is well worth the extra money with its “intel dual core chip, other strengths include a stable operating system that’s extremely resistant to viruses and spyware, and an impressive software bundle” (Cheng). But no matter what I’ve told you before, it’s still your choice as to what you’re laptop needs. Whether you’re looking for the best machine for the lowest price or quality with no price these options are the best on the market

Designed especially for mobile devices, the 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor uses a brand new design structure new hafnium-infused circuitry–which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors–to conserve energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet–up to 3 hours with the included 3-cell battery. Other features include 1 GB of installed RAM (1.5 GB maximum), 54g Wi-Fi networking (802.11b/g), multi-format memory card reader, multiple USB ports, and built-in email, web browsing, and digital media applications.

It comes preinstalled with the Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system, which offers more experienced users an enhanced and innovative experience that incorporates Windows Live features like Windows Live Messenger for instant messaging and Windows Live Mail for consolidated email accounts on your desktop.

Processor
The Intel Atom processor uses a brand new design structure that packs in 47 million transistors into a single chip sized at just 22mm (0.87 inches), and it uses just 2.5 watts of power–less than 1/10 of the 35 watts used by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor–for excellent battery management. This 1.6 GHz Atom N270 processor also includes a power-optimized front side bus of 533 MHz for faster data transfer on demanding mobile applications and a 512 KB L2 cache (which temporarily stores data).

Storage
This version of the Aspire One comes with a 120 GB hard disk drive (5400 RPM), which offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 26,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data–akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

Memory
The 1 GB of installed RAM (512 MB onboard memory and one 512 MB DIMM, 533 MHz) can be expanded to a maximum of 1.5 GB of RAM,

DVD/CD Drive
Because of its size, the Aspire One does not come with an integrated optical drive, but optional CD/DVD read/write drives can be connected to the laptop via one of the three USB ports, enabling you to create your music mixes, burn movies to DVD, and more.

Connectivity
This Acer Aspire One notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN (Acer InviLink) that’s compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g networks and offers Acer’s SignalUp technology for enhanced antenna efficiency. This notbook provides the following connections:

3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals–from digital cameras to MP3 players

Secure Digital (SD) card reader, also compatible with MultiMedia cards (MMCs)

Multi-in-one card reader supports SD, MMC, Memory Stick/Memory Stick PRO, and XD Picture Cards

1 VGA monitor port

1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack

RJ-45 port for 10/100 Fast Ethernet connection

Screen, Video and Audio
The 8.9-inch screen has a WSVGA resolution (1024 x 600) and support for up a 262K color depth. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses shared video memory with the main memory. Acer’s CrystalBrite display technology guarantees the best possible visual experience by preventing the diffusion of surrounding light and internal ray. Compared to normal TFT LCDs, Acer CrystalBrite technology is able to read color coordinates more accurately, thus minimizing distortion and creating high-fidelity colors in all environments.

This notebook includes an integrated audio card with Microsoft DirectSound compatibility, and it includes two stereo speakers.

What’s in the Box
This package contains the Acer Aspire One notebook PC (AOA150-1006; LU.S040B.110), rechargeable 3-cell lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a limited warranty for parts and labor for one year from date of purchase.

Customer Review: Only downside is slow wifi
For the features the computer runs great and I have no problems. Some complain about the fan noise, but simple free app fixed that problem. The only issue I can’t seem to iron out is the slow Wifi. I can’t seem to get it where it’s suppose to be, it’s always lagging behind. If anyone else fixed this problem let me know! I use this laptop a lot in the garage, I try to do as much work on my car myself. The laptop fits under hood, under the car, in the trunk, under the sink, in the attic…..
Customer Review: Limited by useful
Needed a light note taker … tried several ‘digital’ pens, none worked very well. Spent some weeks reviewing the netbook field, decided on the Aspire One.

I take it to meetings to take minutes (Open Office), keyboard is big enough; later transfer the files to my desktop (thumb drive as I cannot make the One see the Win network), edit, print and email the minutes. All very simple.

I also take it to the beach house to web surf and check email, easy to pack!

I’ve had to reload the O/S only once … none since I stopped trying to ‘improve’ the system. Added a backup routine. Might try to upgrade to Firefox 3, but those linux instructions!

On the plus side (on linux), I didn’t have to buy (and renew) the firewall/malware/antivirus and all the other XP ‘necessities.’

There are four computers in my house, this is the one everyone wants to use! It boots Fast, 6-cell battery last up to 7 hours, finds wireless networks better than my full size laptop, runs MS Office very well with just 1 GIG. of memory. At 2.5 lbs. it is great for people on the go, business, or pleasure it is computer I choose to take on the road. Suggest anyone who want a external drive to load software go to you local computer store and purchase a USB to IDE, cable setup (this cable does IDE, SETA, and Scussy drives) for 20.00 to 30.00 dollars, pick up a internal RW-DVD drive for 30.00 or so and bingo load anything you want. Finally, this really is the best deal (299.00) I have ever gotten on a new computer!!
Customer Review: Few Minor Flaws, but Still Great
I love this thing! It has a few minor flaws that could have been easily improved. That’s why it got 4 stars instead of 5.

PROS:
- Excellent battery life (about 6-7 hours)
- Suspend works well (I have it mapped to the power key for quick standby/resume)
- Display is incredibly crisp
- Keyboard feels great, despite being small
- Great construction (doesn’t feel flimsy at all)
- Really nice job on the WinXP Home installation — not bloated with junk, etc.
- Highly-customizable Synaptics touchpad (great management software)
- Fast for a cheap netbook
- Very portable
- Great for browsing the web on the couch or on the road

CONS:
- Home and End keys are Fn keys (you need to hold down Fn+PgUp to get Home and Fn+PgDn to get End). Instead, it has PrtSc, Pause, and Ins keys — not nearly as useful as Home and End would be.
- Keyboard is a bit small and takes some getting used to.
- Status lights cannot be seen when the lid is closed.
- Small touchpad makes it too easy to scroll instead of moving the pointer.
- Scroll doesn’t always work because it starts at about 1/8 of an inch away from the molded edge of the touchpad.
- Dead zone at the bottom 1/4 inch of the already small touchpad makes moving the mouse a bit annoying at times (but see below).
- Only 1024 x 600 resolution (although this is common with netbooks). The 600 rows make it a bit tough to view content.

Overall, this netbook is great. I considered others that were slimmer and lighter (like the HP), but they have much smaller hard drives and shorter battery life. Plus, I got a 90 day return policy and 2 year warranty by buying from [...].

As for the touchpad with a 1/4 inch dead zone at the bottom and scrolling issues, I simply put a 1/4 inch piece of clear tape along the bottom and right edges of the touchpad. This provides just enough texture for a finger to sense the edges of the mouse area and to know where the scroll area is. It is much easier to use now.

“Great Little Netbook” 2010-02-06
By Gary Walker (USA)
I really like this netbook. Its light and has the full resolution screen. I do find that I use a wireless mouse when I am doing Windows work. Its big enough to do real work on. The wifi works great and will latch on in most places. Make sure that you know about the slide switch on the lower left of the keyboard which turn on and off wifi. I find the screen nice, but would like a little more contrast at times. I have trouble seeing the vertical sliders of some windows apps. The battery really is 8 hours, and I don’t take my charger with me on weekends–but I don’t do videos.

I think its a home run. I will probably go for an iPad in a couple of months. I think its a step up, but of course at a significant uptick in price. I did opt for a Runcore SSD, which has made it a bit faster.

“Gift” 2009-12-14
By C. Gullick (Baltimore MD)
My 13 year old daughter purchased this netbook with her birthday money. She loves it! I think it’s a liitle slow, but that’s compared to my Macbook. She is able to check her emails, communicate in her social networds and surf the web. Apparently, that’s all a girl needs.

“Great for price, but it FREEZES!” 2009-11-22
By K. Lyle (CA)
Love the size of the netbook… perfect. Keyboard is full-sized with the 11.6″ Acer, which is a big reason I got it over the 10.1″. Only problem so far (I’ve had it a month) is that it freezes constantly for NO reason. I’m always rebooting. Called Amazon within a week of receiving it… wanted an exchange.. and they were already unavailable from Amazon. So.. I could’ve sent it back for a refund but would then have had to pay more for a replacement, since I’d have had to get it from another one of their vendors. I’ve just hung on to it, hoping more would show up online. No such luck as of yet. I may end up sending it in to Acer (since my 30 days are nearly up) for fixing… I’ve heard this happens with this computer, and it’s the hard drive.

Otherwise, it’s a good little computer.

“Excellent Productivity Tool” 2009-11-21
By Alexander D. Richards (Dallas, TX)
I was hesitant about this purchase because I knew an updated line of net-books was in the near future. But I am glad I purchased the much needed machine.

The good things: It is very light and portable without making any of the sacrifices commonly associated with net-books (screens that are too small, cramped keyboards, etc.), and its battery life is incredible.

The not-so-good things: I’ve heard many different comments regarding the loud fan, and my net-book seems to fall between the good and bad. When plugged in, the fan stays on constantly and whines. I found a quick fix for this, however, with an application called “Acer Aspire One Fan Control”, which is a free utility that allows you to set the fans to turn on only when the CPU reaches a certain temperature, and, likewise, to turn off when the CPU reaches the cooling point temperature. When running on battery power, though, the fan remains off unless you begin streaming youtube content, or hulu.

Ah yes, Hulu, bringing me to my next qualm with this product: it will play hulu videos, but if you want to watch without frame stutter, you must use the “pop-out” feature and close all other open windows. A full screen experience is out of the question (A shame considering the wonderful quality of the LCD LED display). Many people make the mistake of blaming the CPU for this hitch. Such blame is true to a degree, but the real culprit lies in Adobe’s Flash software which doesn’t make use of the GMA 500 graphics chip to decode and play the streaming video content; consequently, the meager 1.33ghz atom chip must bear the brunt of the task. A software update in the future could reverse this and, I think, please many net-book users. Youtube, however, plays fine.

Although this review seems overloaded with the not-so-good, I still rate this little machine a four star product for its productive uses. I’m a college student who does a great deal of writing in my courses, and such a portable, energizer-bunny of a laptop suits my needs perfectly. I’m sure if you take copious notes in class and need a machine that will last the whole long day on a single charge and want keep the price below $300, than this machine will shine.

It serves basic multimedia purpose well, and if you don’t place desktop-class expectations on it, you won’t be disappointed.

Cheers.

“love it” 2009-08-16
By Gonzalo W. Zapata
In the house we have other models of the netbook, the 8.9 LCD screen.

This one I like the keyboard it has just enough more space that you can type comfortable with it. The scree is better than the 8.9 LCD and so far I have no issues with it.

I will probably in the near future will add more memory and a bigger hard drive, but you can’t beat the price as it does all you need to do for a netbook.

I can take it anywhere, watch a movie, surf the internet and so on. I will recommended.

“Great netbook” 2009-06-11
By A.
“Great if you are looking for something for JUST your netbook.” 2010-03-11
By V. Hunter (Deer Park, WA USA)
This case would be great if you were looking for something for JUST your netbook and nothing else…not even cords or a mouse. It does have a front zipper for those accessories, but they barely fit and it makes the case look lumpy, bumpy and bulky. I would say that it is constructed well and I don’t have any problems with the craftman ship of the item.

I ended up replacing this with slightly larger Targus brand case. It’s only 1″ wider and 1.5″ longer, but it gives you just enough room for those extras. The Case Logic will unfortunately end up in the bottom of my closet.

It’s light, provides ample padding and my netbook fits in there with just enough room. The only disadvantage is the padding inside is red and might stain a white computer. The pocket is an advantage and roomy enough to take a mouse and the power cords/adapters. It’s definitely good for keeping scuffs and scrapes off the netbook. I use it to provide extra padding inside a backpack I carry all my netbook stuff in.

“Slick Case” 2010-02-23
By Joseph P. Lacerra
This case for my Dell Inspiron is exactly what I expected and more. Of course there is no way to unobtrusively store the power supply and a little travel mouse, and that should not be expected. Those items would bulge in any case. This item is just what is needed to protect and carry the netbook. And it’s very reasonably priced.

Linux gurus and newbies alike look forward to the Year of the Linux Desktop, a magical time when the coolest operating system ever will finally gain mainstream acceptance. In that year, they say, you will be able to go into Wal-Mart and pick up a Linux computer. In that year, average non-technical people will choose Linux over Microsoft Windows. In that year Windows will lose its shine, and the world’s eyes will turn to a new challenger!

Some say that that year is a myth. Some say it’s a dream, to one day look forward to.

I say it’s already happened. Here’s why!

The Average Non-Technical Person Could and Did Choose Linux in 2007

Average person able to walk into Wal-Mart and pick up a Linux PC? Been there, done that in 2007. On October 31st, 2007, Everex released their gPC running its own gOS, a variant of Ubuntu. And not only did they sell it at Wal-Mart, it sold out! The $200 machine is no longer on hand in their brick-and-mortar stores, but today, almost a year later, it’s still being sold on Walmart.com. Take a look!

They weren’t even the first major vendor to start selling Linux PCs. Dell beat them to it, on May 24th, 2007. And while Dell has flirted with Linux before, their 2007 Ubuntu offerings are still going strong, updating with each new release and offering DVD playback codecs. Dell now sells Ubuntu PCs in select European markets, and has even expanded their Ubuntu lineup to include their attractive XPS notebooks. And while they don’t have a link to their main Ubuntu PC lineup on their front page, they now feature Ubuntu as a low-cost alternative to Windows XP Home Edition on their Inspiron Mini netbooks. And there it’s featured right alongside Windows.

“Well, sure,” you say, “but the Inspiron Mini was released in 2008.” Two words: Asus Eee. This ultraportable notebook defined the netbook formfactor, and was released on October 16th, 2007, featuring a customized variant of Xandros. It quickly made Amazon’s list of their top 10 best-selling notebooks, with 300,000 Linux notebooks sold in 2007 and an additional two million projected to be sold in 2008.

Like Dell, Asus has only expanded its commitment to Linux. They now offer the Linux-based Splashtop instant-on OS on their Eee Box PCs, even the ones that have Windows XP preinstalled. Several other vendors have begun offering mainstream Linux PCs as well, including Acer’s Aspire and HP’s Mini-Note. But Asus got the ball rolling with their Eee netbooks, and they did it in 2007.

Why? Because …

Windows Vista was Released in 2007

Okay, so maybe Asus used Linux for their Eee netbooks because it made sense for the form factor. But despite Windows enthusiasts’ claims that its adoption rate has been the same as (or better than) Windows XP’s, Windows Vista was really the turning point at which PC hardware manufacturers realized that they had to stop being dependent on Microsoft. And Windows Vista was launched worldwide on January 30th, 2007.

I still remember the advertisements … the snack machine with Windows Vista boxes inside, and a dollar bill slot that read “INSERT MEMORY HERE.” (It was an ad for a company that sold RAM upgrades.) Or the full-page ad that showed this guy with his hands pressed to his forehead, sitting in front of his computer, and the caption was something like “Windows Vista giving you headaches? Buy our books!” That one was on the back of Vista’s official magazine. It was that bad.

About the only people saying that Vista was not a failure are Paul Thurrott and (other) Microsoft representatives. And perhaps the only metric by which it’s performed well is Microsoft’s “180 million licenses sold,” which that doesn’t take into account the businesses which bought Vista licenses and immediately downgraded to Windows XP. The fact that they have to do this to begin with, and that Microsoft is able to sell so many boxes of damaged goods, is not a testament to Microsoft’s ethics … or their ability to give their customers what they want.

The people on the Ubuntu forums have never had an easier time recruiting people to try their OS. People like me.

2007 Was the Year that I First Tried Linux

And what a year it was! I used Fedora as my primary desktop OS for most of 2007, and tried Ubuntu out as well. And while I don’t use Linux today, I liked what I saw, and I continue to recommend it to friends … especially friends who are frustrated with Windows.

As it turns out, I wasn’t alone. According to Market Share by Net Applications, the number of people who used any version of Linux to access the web nearly doubled between January of 2007 and January of 2008. So who’s buying those 180 million Windows Vista licenses? People who were using other versions of Windows.

The Upshot

Linux at Wal-Mart. Linux from Dell. Mainstream kid-friendly Linux subnotebooks. And twice the number of people using Linux by the end of the year. 2007 was the Year of the Linux Desktop, and it’s just gotten better from there. And while it’s still not being widely deployed on the desktop by gamers or enterprise customers, give it time. After a few of them start to play with their netbooks, they’ll wonder why they have to put up with Vista at home and XP at work.

Me? I’m in the market for an iMac … dual-booting Fedora and Snow Leopard.

This package contains the Acer Aspire One notebook PC (AOA150-1784), rechargeable 6-cell lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a limited warranty for parts and labor for one year from date of purchase.
Customer Review: Acer Netbook OK
I am really pleased with this. While the screen is small, I bought it because I wanted the overall small size and light weight, primarily for travel use, and I find the screen is OK for light duty web surfing and email. Biggest problem is I use aol for email and they fill up half the screen with ads. It’s fine for web surfing. I bought the 6 cell battery model (hard to find) and battery life is good - maybe not the 6 hours they claim, but probably 4 even with constant use. I found I needed an external cd drive ($13.95 online) because there was software I wanted to put on it (office, filemaker, etc). Also bought a wireless mouse to improve usability.

Anyway, I wouldn’t buy it for a primary computer, but for light duty while traveling, it’s great.
Customer Review: Amazing Acer netbook
Light and convenient, worth every penny to upgrade to the 6 cell battery(5 hours as opposed to the mere 90 mins that 3 cell offers)…this little netbook has got heads turning and tongues wagging. It’s perfect for anyone travelling, anyone tired of dragging an outdated laptop, anyone who uses internet regularly. I highly recommend this machine for your daily dose of facebook or for checking emails. If you don’t have a color preference, you may be able to save additional $$$. When I was shopping around the dark blue version cost nearly $100 more. Happy trails!

When ultraportable netbook computers were first introduced to the consumer markets in 2007, they were often seen as subpar replacements for the more popular notebook computers. They lacked many of the features and performance of their notebook counterparts. However, they resided in a much lower price range.

But today, with our computing technology getting smaller and more advanced netbooks are quickly gaining ground on notebook computers. Most netbook computers now offer features that you can find in most laptops such as larger hard drives, x86 processor support and keyboards that are a pleasure to use.

The predecessor to netbooks were called handheld pc’s, Most sported HVGA (Half-VGA 640×240) Touch screens and ran a variant of Microsoft Windows CE. Some examples of these machines are the NEC MobilePro Series, and Hewlett Packards Jornada series. These machines were introduced in the mid to late 90’s and lacked many of today’s standard features such as built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality. They were less than successful due to many factors.

Who started the netbook craze?

Many claim Asus is responsible for bringing the netbook back to life with the introduction of its Asus EEE pc series in 2007. The first models boasted a 7 inch screen, small flimsy keyboards, solid state disk drives for storage and ran their own modified version of the Linux operating system. Other companies soon followed suit when they realized the market value for netbooks, Everex launched its CloudBook model, MSI released Wind, Acer introduced its Aspire One and both Dell and HP both released a “Mini” series.

What are the advantages of using a netbook over a notebook?

Ultra Portability would be the main factor for most people. Most modern notebooks are either built for business, multimedia or video gaming. They often weigh 5 to 7 pounds and leave a fairly large footprint on your desk or work area as a result of 15 inch or larger screens. Most netbooks weigh in at less than 3 pounds resulting in far less strain on your body when you are mobile for long periods of time.

Battery life is also an important factor. Since most netbooks have smaller displays, lower clock speeds on their processors and no internal optical drives their battery life is significantly longer than your average notebook depending on what you are doing with them. If you are cranking music, surfing the internet via Wi-Fi and have an external optical drive connected all at once your battery life won’t last as long due to the additional power consumption of your peripherals.

Where can I get a netbook and what can I expect to pay for one?

You can find netbooks at most stores that sell laptops such as Best Buy, Office Max and Wal-Mart. You can also find them online at many different locations such as eBay.com, Newegg.com and Tigerdirect.com to name a few.

Most netbooks are in the $200-$400 dollar range depending on features. Netbooks with larger hard drives, more memory and Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system will cost more. It all depends on what features you will need and what style or model you are looking for.

I take it with me to the library every time I go so I can access the wireless network on my own machine, plus I’ve taken it on vacation because it’s so portable. Plus, I do all of my graduate school work on this little machine. It still boots quickly and is able to run multiple applications at once. My favorite aspects of this computer are its portability, decent battery life, and the cute pink color.
Customer Review: Great little machine
Better performer than I was expecting. Only one problem. The memory card reader came not working for Sony memory sticks. It worked for the other formats, just not that one. Annoying, but not a deal breaker.

“Better than expected” 2010-02-19
By Torri (California)
I bought this computer primarily to use at school for taking notes and writing papers, but I have been using it for pretty much everything since I got it. It’s faster than I expected (faster than my expensive Piece of C*** HP tablet), but then one of the first things I did when I bought this computer was delete all the unnecessary bloatware. It’s light enough that when I drop it in my backpack I don’t really notice it, and the battery lasts a good 5 hours, sometimes more, which is astonishing since it’s adveritised as good for 2.5. The keyboard was a little strange at first, but now that I’m used to it, my typing has become much faster and more accurate on it’s smaller keys. I bought the copper brown, which is a nice, understated but interesting brown (it’s almost the color of cola, or coffee with a sheen). My only real complaint is that the speakers are underneath the front bottom edge of the computer, so if you are using it as a laptop the sound is muffled. Oh, and also the screen has a fairly large plastic border… I’m sure there’s some mechanical reason for that, but other computers this size have smaller borders with larger screens, and thus are the same total size. I mean, I bought the 8.9 because I wanted a smaller computer, not a smaller screen.

All in all this is a great little computer. Fits perfectly on those tiny college desks with room to spare, hasn’t crashed once in the month I’ve had it, and it’s faster by virtue of XP rather than Vista (I imagine it’ll be even faster once I dump XP entirely and load up Linux). Another interesting note, I was sitting near a girl with a new Eee PC a couple days ago, and we started up at the same time. By the time hers was loaded and ready, I was already knee deep in note-taking and had three other programs open and running. Why, why Acer, did you have to discontinue this terrific little laptop?? Even my SO, who’s a bloodthirsty Mac user, likes this computer.

“Acer makes the worst laptops” 2010-01-18
By Moshe Miller
I have had this for a while now, so i really know the scoop:

here is my story:

After about 2 days, the computer kept shuting off randomly

After a week my fan was making rediculously loud sounds, so i had to send it back which acer made ME pay for return shipping

after a few months i was getting blue screens, and random freezing (after about 5 minutes of use)

“Still Reliable After 15 Months of Daily Use” 2010-01-03
By Cymbre (Houston, TX USA)
Awesome little workhorse of a netbook and still going strong after 15 months of daily use. The light weight and small size is great for taking it everywhere I go. When I need more display room for my work, it’s a snap to connect the Aspire One to a large size monitor using the VGA port. Quiet fan and cool running, long lasting battery. Keep the temp files and reg clean and it will continue to run as fast as the first day it booted up. The price has dropped and I’ll be buying more Aspire Ones for my home network.

“BUYER BEWARE; AFTER A YEAR OF USE, IT JUST DIED!!!!!” 2010-01-02
By H. Frias (Mission Hills, California)
I loved and used this computer for a year. I took care of it very well and always used it on hard surfaces such as desks; however, after a year of ranting and raving about how great this computer is, it JUST DIED on me. It won’t turn on, and it doesn’t work. I have replaced the battery thinking that the battery might had dies, and yet again nothing!! It essentially has been bricked. Acer didn’t want to help me because it died the day after the year warranty had expired. I hate them!!

DO NOT BUY IT!! YOU WILL LOVE IT, BUT THEN IT’LL JUST DIE ON YOU AND YOU’LL REGRET IT!!!

I will never buy a netbook ever again.

Buyer beware, they are cheap for a reason!!

“Great Laptop for Casual User” 2010-02-22
By K. McClung (Texas)
I originally was wanting to purchase a secondary laptop for college, something that would be lightweight and easy to carry to class with me.

This computer is amazingly light, I stick it right in my purse and take it everywhere with me! The specs are good and it is perfect for doing homework or surfing the internet. Of course you have to get used to the small screen and keyboard, but I got accustomed to that in about a week or so.

I honestly have no complaints about this laptop, I have had mine for about 6 months now and still use it almost every day. Of course the system is too small for an optical drive and that is understandable but doesn’t take away from it’s usefulness. I have a normal sized laptop to watch movies and burn DVDs but I take the little one with me so I can have the convenience of being connected 24/7.

Definitely a great buy for someone who is always on the go~

“Terrific little computer” 2010-02-10
By Jessica L. Smith (Nebraska)
I have used this netbook a couple of times a week for the past year. Runs quietly and quickly for the size. I find it perfect for reading the news or typing papers. It has enough power to stream videos, play flash games, and upload all my photos to the web. The weight is excellent for carrying around in a purse or backpack and can be used practically anywhere. I purchased a cooling fan (sized for a full size notebook rather than a netbook) and was glad I did as this little guy gets very warm. I have enjoyed this computer and expect to enjoy it for a considerable amount of time into the future.

Spencer (MAUI HAWAII)
I GOT MY ACER VERY FAST AFTER I PUT THE ORDER IN. ITS VERY CUTE! LOOKS DO MATTER. THE KEY BOARD TAKES SOME GETTING USE TO. I LIKE IT BECAUSE IT FITS IN MY PURSE. PERFECT FOR ON THE GO , CHECKING EMAIL AND SURFING THE WEB. I HAVE THE 6 CELL BATTERY AND IT STAYS CHARGED FOR ALMLOST FIVE HOURS. ITS FUN TO USE EXCEPT FOR USING THE SPACE BAR. IT JUST DOESNT QUITE FIT RIGHT, BUT IT IS DOABLE.I THINK THE 10 INCH WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER. IT’S STILL A GREAT LITTLE COMPUTER. THE SCREEN, FOR AS SMALL AS IT IS, IS SUPER CLEAR AND SHARP COLOR. I THINK THIS WOULD BE GREAT FOR STUDENTS ON THE GO.

“And it bounces” 2009-11-26
By Skip of Alabama (Alabama)
Got this for the lady wife. She has been more than happy. She sits on the couch and IMs her sister and her daughter, updates her blogs and generally has a good time with it. Seems a trifle slow, but then it IS a netbook.

She dropped it, 4′ onto our ceramic tile kitchen floor. She said it “bounced”. She picked it. No chips, no cracks and it works. It is the tiniest bit out of true. Does not seem to want to sit on all 4 feet. But still works and when it is in her lap she does not even notice.

Some people had wondered about the durability of Acer products. Well, if you can go by this one, I believe they are put together right well.

Have a GREAT Thanksgiving.

“Dont, Just Dont” 2009-10-27
By Sean Grider (Granite City, Il)
HD crashed about three months after buying, Acer said they would replace/repair the unit after we sent it to them. I asked for a FedEx or UPS number and they told me I had to send it in on my dime. I find that to be unacceptable. If your product sucks, dont make the people who were willing to try it out pay for it. Other than that, it was ok for what its meant for. Dont try to use this as a full time, all purpose computer. It will let you down.
