“Poor battery life.” 2010-02-23
By K.. (NY)
The netbook itself does what it was suppose to in terms of performance. The battery life, however, is very short, consistently discharging almost 50% in three days even when off. This severely affects the portability of the machine,as I always have to carry the AC adapter with me, and Acer’s advice to charge the battery for a few cycles and to reset the bios did not help. Very disappointed.

“Good purchase” 2010-02-07
By Chicho (Baltimore, MD United States)
Best price found on Amazon, better than Walmart for a machine with a longer battery life. It has Win XP which I am familiar with, I did not want Win 7 yet. It does everything I need it to do. This was a Christmas gift for my 11 yr old daughter and she really loves it.

“A product only limited by the software installed” 2010-02-06
By Dale Bishop (baltimore, md United States)
This was the second time that I had purchased an Acer product. I should let it be known that I’m not a technology expert, just a frequent user. This Acer One netbook is very easy to use. The screen is a little smaller than I’m used to but i became accustomed to it. I was using this machine constantly, at work and to surf the Web. The only problem that I had was the succeptability to microsoft to viruses and freezing. This was eventually dealt with the pruchase of antivirus software. The experience that I’ve had with these products have encouraged me to reccommend to my friends the purchase of this brand in lieu of other more expensive brands.

“Definitely worth the money” 2010-01-30
By Stephanie Horn (Austin)
This laptop is great. It’s so small it can fit in my purse! The keyboard is almost full (92%). My boyfriend has really big hands, so it’s a bit difficult for him to use, but I have no problems at all. The battery life is amazing. It really DOES last the 6 1/2 hours that it claims.

My only complaint with this laptop is it needs more RAM! If I demand too much of it, it gets really sluggish. I’ll probably open it up at some point and upgrade.

This seems like it would be an excellent laptop for students. It’s cheap, durable, small, and easy to use.

“Better than expected” 2010-02-19
By Torri (California)
I bought this computer primarily to use at school for taking notes and writing papers, but I have been using it for pretty much everything since I got it. It’s faster than I expected (faster than my expensive Piece of C*** HP tablet), but then one of the first things I did when I bought this computer was delete all the unnecessary bloatware. It’s light enough that when I drop it in my backpack I don’t really notice it, and the battery lasts a good 5 hours, sometimes more, which is astonishing since it’s adveritised as good for 2.5. The keyboard was a little strange at first, but now that I’m used to it, my typing has become much faster and more accurate on it’s smaller keys. I bought the copper brown, which is a nice, understated but interesting brown (it’s almost the color of cola, or coffee with a sheen). My only real complaint is that the speakers are underneath the front bottom edge of the computer, so if you are using it as a laptop the sound is muffled. Oh, and also the screen has a fairly large plastic border… I’m sure there’s some mechanical reason for that, but other computers this size have smaller borders with larger screens, and thus are the same total size. I mean, I bought the 8.9 because I wanted a smaller computer, not a smaller screen.

All in all this is a great little computer. Fits perfectly on those tiny college desks with room to spare, hasn’t crashed once in the month I’ve had it, and it’s faster by virtue of XP rather than Vista (I imagine it’ll be even faster once I dump XP entirely and load up Linux). Another interesting note, I was sitting near a girl with a new Eee PC a couple days ago, and we started up at the same time. By the time hers was loaded and ready, I was already knee deep in note-taking and had three other programs open and running. Why, why Acer, did you have to discontinue this terrific little laptop?? Even my SO, who’s a bloodthirsty Mac user, likes this computer.

“Acer makes the worst laptops” 2010-01-18
By Moshe Miller
I have had this for a while now, so i really know the scoop:

here is my story:

After about 2 days, the computer kept shuting off randomly

After a week my fan was making rediculously loud sounds, so i had to send it back which acer made ME pay for return shipping

after a few months i was getting blue screens, and random freezing (after about 5 minutes of use)

ACER=crap

“Still Reliable After 15 Months of Daily Use” 2010-01-03
By Cymbre (Houston, TX USA)
Awesome little workhorse of a netbook and still going strong after 15 months of daily use. The light weight and small size is great for taking it everywhere I go. When I need more display room for my work, it’s a snap to connect the Aspire One to a large size monitor using the VGA port. Quiet fan and cool running, long lasting battery. Keep the temp files and reg clean and it will continue to run as fast as the first day it booted up. The price has dropped and I’ll be buying more Aspire Ones for my home network.

“BUYER BEWARE; AFTER A YEAR OF USE, IT JUST DIED!!!!!” 2010-01-02
By H. I took care of it very well and always used it on hard surfaces such as desks; however, after a year of ranting and raving about how great this computer is, it JUST DIED on me. It won’t turn on, and it doesn’t work. I have replaced the battery thinking that the battery might had dies, and yet again nothing!! It essentially has been bricked. Acer didn’t want to help me because it died the day after the year warranty had expired. I hate them!!

DO NOT BUY IT!! YOU WILL LOVE IT, BUT THEN IT’LL JUST DIE ON YOU AND YOU’LL REGRET IT!!!

I will never buy a netbook ever again.

Buyer beware, they are cheap for a reason!!

The Gateway NX860XL is as much of a desktop replacement as any laptop gets. At the same time, the Gateway NX860XL is one of the safest bet to get a good desktop replacement that you can’t go wrong with. As with all the desktop replacements, the Gateway NX860XL is big and heavy at 1.4 inches thick by 15.6 inches wide by 10.8 inches deep, including the extended battery, and weighs 8.5 pounds or 10.1 pounds with the A/C adapter. However, there are heavier desktop replacements out there (for example, the Acer Aspire 9800 that weighs 17.3 lbs). However, the Gateway NX860XL makes great use of the extra space and weight that is afforded to it. Other than the great 17inch screen, the Gateway NX860XL also has great battery life for a desktop replacement, performs very well with games and much more.

The Gateway NX860XL offers plenty of different ports and connections for the home users:

Headphone and microphone jacks, connectors for four-pin FireWire, VGA, and S-Video, and four USB 2.0 ports, as well as a PC Card slot, a DVD burner, a media card reader. The Internet connectivity comes via Gigabit Ethernet, modem jacks and the integrated Intel 802.11a/b/g wireless networking card.

The Gateway NX860XL offers a superb native resolution of 1680×1050 and provides bright clear display. Gamers will also find the Gateway NX860XL a great laptop buy with its GeForce Go 7900 GS video display card that performed at nearly 94 frames per second in its different Quake 4 tests. The battery life is also great at 3 hours and 6 minutes, Which means that you can play a whole movie on it.

However, it’s what on the inside that counts, right? The Gateway NX860XL runs on a 2.2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. It also comes with 2GB of RAM and 100GM hard-drive that spins at a very impressive 7200rpm. All of this can be upgraded or downgraded as you desire. For example, getting 4 GB of RAM will cost you an extra $1350, and this is obviously not a wise investment whatsoever.

The biggest downfall of the Gateway NX860XL is the lack of a next-generation optical drive system. It comes with a standard DVD burner. Even without a Blu-ray drive or something similar, the Gateway NX860XL is a great media and entertainment hub. However, any more upgrades might make it too expensive to consider.

The base price of the Gateway NX860XL is $1799 which goes up over $2000 with some better components. You get the most bang for your buck with some smart configuration with high end components and upgrades. The best configuration for the Gateway is :

Windows XP Media Center 2005 SP2; 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7400; 2,048MB DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz; 256MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GS; 100GB Hitachi 7,200rpm SATA

The Gateway NX860XL comes with a standard one0year mail in warranty while upgrading to three years of service costs $159. However, this is only an added cost, and can be easily avoided. One year should be more than enough.

All in all, the Gateway NX860XL is a pretty safe buy at a decent price. Although I would prefer a Toshiba P105 Satellite to it, the Gateway NX860XL is still a great bet and one tht you just can’t go wrong with.

Designed especially for mobile devices, the 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor uses a brand new design structure new hafnium-infused circuitry–which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors–to conserve energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet–up to 5.5 hours with the included 6-cell battery. Other features include 1 GB of installed RAM (1.5 GB maximum), 54g Wi-Fi networking (802.11b/g), multi-format memory card reader, multiple USB ports, and built-in email, web browsing, and digital media applications.

It comes preinstalled with the Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system, which offers more experienced users an enhanced and innovative experience that incorporates Windows Live features like Windows Live Messenger for instant messaging and Windows Live Mail for consolidated email accounts on your desktop.

Processor
The Intel Atom processor uses a brand new design structure that packs in 47 million transistors into a single chip sized at just 22mm (0.87 inches), and it uses just 2.5 watts of power–less than 1/10 of the 35 watts used by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor–for excellent battery management. This 1.6 GHz Atom N270 processor also includes a power-optimized front side bus of 533 MHz for faster data transfer on demanding mobile applications and a 512 KB L2 cache (which temporarily stores data).

Storage
This version of the Aspire One comes with a 160 GB hard disk drive (5400 RPM), which offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 26,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data–akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

Memory
The 1 GB of installed RAM (512 MB onboard memory and one 512 MB DIMM, 533 MHz) can be expanded to a maximum of 1.5 GB of RAM,

DVD/CD Drive
Because of its size, the Aspire One does not come with an integrated optical drive, but optional CD/DVD read/write drives can be connected to the laptop via one of the three USB ports, enabling you to create your music mixes, burn movies to DVD, and more.

Connectivity
This Acer Aspire One notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN (Acer InviLink) that’s compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g networks and offers Acer’s SignalUp technology for enhanced antenna efficiency. This notbook provides the following connections:

3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals–from digital cameras to MP3 players

Secure Digital (SD) card reader, also compatible with MultiMedia cards (MMCs)

Multi-in-one card reader supports SD, MMC, Memory Stick/Memory Stick PRO, and XD Picture Cards

1 VGA monitor port

1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack

RJ-45 port for 10/100 Fast Ethernet connection

56K modem port (V.90)

Screen, Video and Audio
The 8.9-inch screen has a WSVGA resolution (1024 x 600) and support for up a 262K color depth. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses shared video memory with the main memory. Acer’s CrystalBrite display technology guarantees the best possible visual experience by preventing the diffusion of surrounding light and internal ray. Compared to normal TFT LCDs, Acer CrystalBrite technology is able to read color coordinates more accurately, thus minimizing distortion and creating high-fidelity colors in all environments.

This notebook includes an integrated audio card with Microsoft DirectSound compatibility, and it includes two stereo speakers.

What’s in the Box
This package contains the Acer Aspire One notebook PC (AOA150-1126; LU.S040B.162), rechargeable 6-cell lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a limited warranty for parts and labor for one year from date of purchase.

Customer Review: Very Wise Purchase
Acer Aspire One AOD150-1577 10.1-Inch Diamond Black Netbook - 6.5 Hour Battery LifeI bought this computer for MY father’s day gift. There are four computers in my house, this is the one everyone wants to use! It boots Fast, 6-cell battery last up to 7 hours, finds wireless networks better than my full size laptop, runs MS Office very well with just 1 GIG. of memory. At 2.5 lbs. it is great for people on the go, business, or pleasure it is computer I choose to take on the road. Suggest anyone who want a external drive to load software go to you local computer store and purchase a USB to IDE, cable setup (this cable does IDE, SETA, and Scussy drives) for 20.00 to 30.00 dollars, pick up a internal RW-DVD drive for 30.00 or so and bingo load anything you want. Finally, this really is the best deal (299.00) I have ever gotten on a new computer!!
Customer Review: Few Minor Flaws, but Still Great
I love this thing! It has a few minor flaws that could have been easily improved. That’s why it got 4 stars instead of 5.

PROS:
- Excellent battery life (about 6-7 hours)
- Suspend works well (I have it mapped to the power key for quick standby/resume)
- Display is incredibly crisp
- Keyboard feels great, despite being small
- Great construction (doesn’t feel flimsy at all)
- Really nice job on the WinXP Home installation — not bloated with junk, etc.
- Highly-customizable Synaptics touchpad (great management software)
- Fast for a cheap netbook
- Very portable
- Great for browsing the web on the couch or on the road

CONS:
- Home and End keys are Fn keys (you need to hold down Fn+PgUp to get Home and Fn+PgDn to get End). Instead, it has PrtSc, Pause, and Ins keys — not nearly as useful as Home and End would be.
- Keyboard is a bit small and takes some getting used to.
- Status lights cannot be seen when the lid is closed.
- Small touchpad makes it too easy to scroll instead of moving the pointer.
- Scroll doesn’t always work because it starts at about 1/8 of an inch away from the molded edge of the touchpad.
- Dead zone at the bottom 1/4 inch of the already small touchpad makes moving the mouse a bit annoying at times (but see below).
- Only 1024 x 600 resolution (although this is common with netbooks). The 600 rows make it a bit tough to view content.

Overall, this netbook is great. I considered others that were slimmer and lighter (like the HP), but they have much smaller hard drives and shorter battery life. Plus, I got a 90 day return policy and 2 year warranty by buying from [...].

As for the touchpad with a 1/4 inch dead zone at the bottom and scrolling issues, I simply put a 1/4 inch piece of clear tape along the bottom and right edges of the touchpad. This provides just enough texture for a finger to sense the edges of the mouse area and to know where the scroll area is. It is much easier to use now.

1) Install a compact theme. There are several compact themes available for Firefox that really make the most of those precious pixels. These themes shrink icons, reduce space, and make the tab bar quite a bit thinner. My favorite compact themes for Firefox are Littlefox, Blue Ice, AzureFox, and Classic Compact. If you’re on a Linux system and using the GNOME desktop environment, you might consider a compact GTK theme…I recommend Dust Compact.

2) Consolidate your menus. The Tiny Menu extension for Firefox puts all the standard Firefox menu bar items (File, Edit, View, Tools, etc.) into one single master drop down menu. After installing this extension, you’ll be able to fit your menu, navigation buttons, url bar, and search box all on one toolbar! Just right click on a blank space in the Firefox navigation bar, and select “customize toolbars” from the menu. From there you can drag-and-drop menu items on just one toolbar.

3) Hide the status bar. Installing the AutoHideStatusbar will cause the status bar at the bottom of the Firefox window to hide automatically unless you rest your mouse on the bottom of the screen. This frees up quite a bit space, but still allows use of the status bar without loss of functionality. You can also have it unhide when loading a webpage or mousing over a link.

4) Move status bar functions to the URL bar. The Fission extension for Firefox combines the progress bar and URL bar, similar to the the Safari browser. In addition, you can configure Fission to show link locations on mouseover in the URL bar as well. If you install this Firefox extension along with AutoHideStatusbar, you’ll probably never have to use the status bar again.

5) Use smart zooming on webpages. The DefaultFullZoom Level extension for Firefox provides toolbar buttons for the page and text zoom features in Firefox 3.0. In addition, it provides a neat “fit-to-window” feature, which will automatically resize and zoom a website to fit the width of your Firefox window. You can use this to minimize sidescrolling on many websites, and the best part is that DefaultZoomLevel remembers your zoom preferences for each website you visit.

There you go! 5 ways to optimize your Firefox for small screens. Good luck, and enjoy!

The Aspire One Mail software suite lets you manage up to six email accounts with a single application interface, including office accounts. A small icon to the right of the message quickly and clearly shows the appropriate mail account. Nothing could be simpler to replace push e-mail services without using a corporate server. The Aspire One uses Messenger for Instant Messaging, an application that allows users to simultaneously access Skype, Microsoft Messenger and various other instant messaging services. The software can be used with the integrated video camera for instant video-chats and video conferences. The Mozilla Firefox web browser is optimized for the most popular web sites, and it supports full video streaming capabilities.

Whether you need to write, calculate or present, the Aspire One has everything under control. The Writer program is a fully functional word processing applicatnoi that is compatible with Microsoft Word, allowing you to open and save files directly in the .doc format. The intuitive spreadsheet application makes both newcomers and advanced users feel right at home. And you can create stunning multimedia presentations, complete with 3D clip art, special effects, animation, and special drawing tools.

Storage
This version of the Aspire One comes with 8 GB of NAND flash memory solid-state drive (SSD), which is adequate for students and those who want to use the laptop primarily as an email and web surfing device. Faster and more reliable, flash memory provides a rapid boot-up and quicker access to applications while improving battery life. Flash memory is also more reliable than hard disk memory, mainly because there are no moving parts. Since data is written to stationary flash memory instead of a spinning hard disk, you have less risk of hardware problems with the hard disk when you’re on the move. It’s an ideal feature for a travel notebook where knocks and sudden movements are par for the course.

In addition, the Aspire One reads five different types of memory cards–Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO and xD-Picture Card–for maximum flexibility. The additional SD card slot seamlessly integrates with the internal NAND flash module as an added storage device. The ability to have both a multi-in-1 card reader and a SD card reader at the same time allows you to download photos from the multi-in-1 to share with others and store to the SD card as an internal storage device simultaneously.

Memory
The 512 MB of installed RAM (1 x 512 MB, PC2-5300) offers a 667 MHz speed. This notebook can be expanded to a maximum of 1.5 GB of RAM,

This package contains the Acer Aspire One notebook PC (AOA110-1295; LU.S020A.012), rechargeable 3-cell lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a limited warranty for parts and labor for one year from date of purchase.
Customer Review: Only downside is slow wifi
For the features the computer runs great and I have no problems. Some complain about the fan noise, but simple free app fixed that problem. The only issue I can’t seem to iron out is the slow Wifi. I can’t seem to get it where it’s suppose to be, it’s always lagging behind. If anyone else fixed this problem let me know! I use this laptop a lot in the garage, I try to do as much work on my car myself. The laptop fits under hood, under the car, in the trunk, under the sink, in the attic…..
Customer Review: Limited by useful
Needed a light note taker … tried several ‘digital’ pens, none worked very well. Spent some weeks reviewing the netbook field, decided on the Aspire One.

I take it to meetings to take minutes (Open Office), keyboard is big enough; later transfer the files to my desktop (thumb drive as I cannot make the One see the Win network), edit, print and email the minutes. All very simple.

I also take it to the beach house to web surf and check email, easy to pack!

I’ve had to reload the O/S only once … none since I stopped trying to ‘improve’ the system. Added a backup routine. Might try to upgrade to Firefox 3, but those linux instructions!

On the plus side (on linux), I didn’t have to buy (and renew) the firewall/malware/antivirus and all the other XP ‘necessities.’

A Review of the Acer Aspire One Laptop - Today, most everyone has a laptop. They’re an important part to everyday life for most people, and having the right laptop is key. Everyone needs to find a laptop that matches their needs, lifestyle, and their personality. I have had a few laptops in my life, but none have been as great as the Acer Aspire One.

The Acer Aspire One is a miniature laptop that is not only stylish, but functional. This little laptop ranges between $300 and $400 depending on the vendor. As expensive as it is for only a quarter of the size of a normal laptop, this baby packs a lot of punch. It has a 2mb hard drive with many ports for external memory. It’s fast and reliable. As long as you don’t have too much stored on it. This laptop is best for those who are normally Internet only people. Although, you can add as many programs as you like, given you have external memory. The Acer Aspire One comes with built in wireless capabilities and will automatically connect to any available hotspot in your surrounding area. It also has a great keyboard that is only a quarter smaller than a typical keyboard so there is no hard transitions. The only other downfall of this laptop is there is no CD drive and a separate one will have to be purchased.

Over all, this is a fantastic little computer. It comes loaded with Windows XP, which is a nice break from the bug filled Windows Vista. The Acer Aspire One is also incredibly portable and will fit into the average woman’s handbag. You can take it anywhere you want; work, school, mall, library, and anywhere you can bring a computer. It’s also a tough computer. I’m not saying you can play hockey with it, but it can take a few bumps like a champ. And for those style conscious, fear not, this laptop comes in an array of colors. Personally, mine is pink, but they also come in black, white, blue and a few more colors that will fit your personality.

Everyone needs a laptop these days. It’s getting almost impossible to live without one. And it says a lot about who you are depending on the laptop you carry. You need to get a laptop that will suit your needs and get you where you want to go. If you are looking for an extremely portable laptop that is great with the internet and everything it has to offer, the Acer Aspire One is for you!

Designed especially for mobile devices, the 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor uses a brand new design structure new hafnium-infused circuitry, which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors to conserve energy and gives you more time away from the wall outlet–up to 2.5 hours with the included 3-cell battery.

In addition, this Aspire One comes with an 8 GB Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) memory card–great for storing digital media. The Asprire One has one dedicated SD memory card slot for the included SDHC card as well as a second multi-in-one card reader that’s compatible with five different types of memory cards–Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO and xD-Picture Card–for maximum flexibility. It is backed by a limited warranty for parts and labor for one year from date of purchase.
Customer Review: The Toyota Corolla of computers
If it were a car, it would be a Toyota Corolla; dependable, small and performs its intended task admirably.
Customer Review: Good second computer
Lots of features for the price, with most everything you need in a second computer. However, the computer is slower than I expected, perhaps due to flash-memory access time. Fine for e-mails and general Web use. Good screen resolution and good battery life. Slow for functions like picture editing, though.

I recently had the opportunity to test drive an Acer Aspire One. I’d been curious about netbooks for a while, and the opportunity to test one out for free for a month was too good to pass up. I wanted to try the computer out first hand and determine if it would really be useful in my day-to-day life as a teacher or if it was just another unnecessary gadget.

It turned out to be an awesome computer, perfectly suited to my needs as an educator. When the free trial was up, I immediately purchased one to keep permanently.

Mobility, or “Wow that’s small!”

Probably the single most common comment I heard about the netbook was, “That’s so small!” which was followed closely by, “That’s so cute!”

The computer is approximately ten inches by seven and a half inches and about an inch and a half thick. It’s literally the size of a book - only slightly larger than your average hardcover book.

The size of the book is its greatest selling feature to me. Last year, I traveled between four different classrooms - plus other classes for my lunch, prep, and meetings. I quickly made the decision not to lug around a giant cart or box of stuff. If something didn’t fit into my messenger bag, I didn’t need to take it with me to class.

As a result, I never brought my old laptop - a regular sized, desktop replacement - to school. It was simply too large, and I didn’t want to lug around a laptop bag along with my regular bag full of papers and books. Now, I simply throw the netbook in my regular bag as if it was another book. Since getting the laptop, I haven’t once left to go to school without it in my bag.

Utility, or “What can that thing do?”

After people got over the size of the netbook, they inevitably asked what it could do. My colleagues seemed to think that it was just a mobile gadget - not a fully functional laptop.

Well, it can do just about whatever a regular computer can do. My Acer Aspire One came loaded with Windows XP (although some competitor’s netbooks will come with a Linux OS like Ubuntu). I installed all of my normal applications - Open Office, Google Chrome, Picasa, iTunes. I can use it to type up documents, create and show slideshow notes (i.e. Power Point), organize and edit photos, watch video clips. I’ve yet to come across something that I would normally do in the classroom that I can’t do on my netbook.

The computer also came with built-in wireless functionality. You’ll have to set up a wireless router if you’re school isn’t completely wireless. I picked up a new router for $30, and now I can roam around the classroom without being tethered to the wall. You could also get a wireless data plan from a company like AT&T. They’re a bit expensive ($50+ per month), but you’ll also bypass the districts filter and be able to connect to blocked sites like YouTube.

Of course, This is not a desktop replacement computer. The Intel Atom processor and the Gigabyte of RAM are plenty for your average office and classroom use, but it will come up short in at least two areas: media editing and gaming.

However, I’ve never found it necessary to do any heavy duty audio and video editing at school, nor do I play any modern computer games in my classroom. I’ve got a desktop at home that’s suitable for both of those tasks.

Battery Life

The one area where you should consider upgrading your netbook is the battery. Many of the first generation of netbooks came with a 3-cell Lithium Ion battery. The Acer Aspire One that I tested came with a 6-cell Lithium Ion battery.

The difference? 2.5 hours of usage verse 5+ hours of usage. With the 6-cell battery, I can use the netbook continuously throughout the day without worrying about plugging it in or charging it. This makes it a lot quicker and more convenient to set up the computer, and I don’t have to worry about anything keeping me connected to the wall. It’s kind of silly to have a wireless connection but still need to situate the laptop near a wall outlet for power.

The smaller battery - with about 2.5 hours of battery life - would be acceptable, but I’d definitely have to plug the computer in and charge it at some point throughout the day. I love the freedom of carrying it around, popping it open whenever I need it, and charging it when I get home at night.

Drawbacks?

Is this thing perfect, or are there some drawbacks?

Like I mentioned before, it is underpowered for certain uses - like gaming - but these shouldn’t concern you as an educator.

One drawback that will take a little getting used to is the smaller keyboard. The keys are slightly smaller than usual to help shrink the footprint of the netbook. For the first couple of days, it was awkward to use and I hit some extra keys. I quickly adapted, though, and I can now type at my regular speed - very fast - without any trouble.

There’s also no CD or DVD drive. I never found this to be a problem - I store all of my documents on flash drives. If I really wanted to play a DVD, I could rip the disc into a file and store it on my flash drive. However, if you really need an optical drive for something like playing DVDs you can buy an external DVD drive to hook up to the netbook.

Another drawback is the screen size. The 8.9 inch screen is necessary to keep the computer small, but this means that there’s not a lot of vertical screen space. This makes it annoying to view some websites that have a larger header area or to use an application that has a lot of toolbars at the top of the window. Some of these things can be alleviated by customizing toolbars, but in some cases it’s unavoidable.

This is one drawback that I’m willing to deal with, though. You need to make some sacrifices, and in this case the smaller screen is well worth the awesome level of portability afforded by the computer’s small size.

How Much Is It? And Do I Need to Buy an Acer?

After only a few days of testing the netbook, I was sold. It is perfect for use as an educator - preparing assignments, showing stuff on a projector, allowing kids to research on the internet, etc. In two years, I brought my old laptop to school once. Since I got this netbook, I’ve never gone to school without it.

That’s all well and good, but how much does it cost? The Acer Aspire One retails for about $400. At the time of writing, the machine I got can be purchased on Amazon and other discount retailers for about $300 to $350.

Keep in mind, also, that you don’t need to buy an Acer. There are now several reputable manufacturers of netbooks - Acer, Asus, Dell, MSI, to name a few. As long as you purchase a netbook with similar specifications - an Intel Atom 1.6 ghz processor, 1gb of RAM, a regular hard drive (120 to 160 gb), a six-cell battery, and an 8.9″ or 10.1″ screen - you’ll be fine.

If you’ve been looking for a laptop to use at school, this is it. A netbook will do everything you need, and it won’t weigh you down. For the right price, you definitely won’t be disappointed.

This notebook provides the following connections:

This package contains the Acer Aspire One notebook PC (AOA110-1995; LU.S040B.235), rechargeable 3-cell lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions.

“android not all that” 2010-02-15
By C. French
I purchased the Acer Netbook because of the choice of having a non-microsoft web browser. Unfortunately android is often not fast at all, unless the speed at which it can bring up a gray screen is something you want. Really disappointed in having to depend on microsoft again, since microsoft is now the benchmark all software has to work down to. I expected someone, anyone, to do better. But apparently, android can’t cut it.

“Not a bad netbook at all” 2010-02-13
By Matthew S. Trombley
So I chose this netbook after reviewing a few different computers with comparable specs and pricing, but what made me choose this model is the same thing that’s my favorite feature: it dual-boots XP and Android! The XP is fully functional and fine as far as Windows OSes go, but the Android is where it’s at. It boots up fast, connects me to my email and web browser nice and fast, it features a clean user interface and it’s easy to use. The only thing I’ve noticed that I don’t like is that I haven’t figured out how to import music into Android’s music player, but I just switch over to XP and listen to music on iTunes when the fancy takes me. Overall, it’s a nice little machine, the battery life is good, not quite 9 hours, but still very solid. I would recommend this guy to anyone interested in a portable yet fully functional road-warrior type netbook. Oh, one other thing: the battery protrudes from the body of the computer, which I don’t mind personally (I use it as a handle) but some people might find off-putting.

“Fun and useful!” 2010-02-07
By Jason M. Martin (Jacksonville, Florida United States)
I bought this as a Christmas gift to myself. I have been thrilled with it since I got it. The battery life is great and it is sooo portable. I picked up a Neoprene case for it and I can just grab it and go. I use it mostly for web surfing and playing my MP3 collection through my surround system. I drag it to bed with me when my wife conks out early and play Pogo games. It fits on my nightstand without taking it over. For those type of uses it is great! It might drag a little if you are trying to use it to build or run huge databases but why would you even try on a size screen like this. I have my desktop and my 17″ screen dual-core laptop for that. This is my fun netbook! Its name is Elroy.

“This netbook rocks!” 2010-02-03
By Christopher Reynolds (Texas, USA)
Does exactly what it’s supposed to. It’s not a super computer. I hate reading netbook reviews by people expecting the world out of a netbook. Battery life is awesome, performance is exactly what I hoped for. If you are looking for a gaming computer or just a super fast portable, this isn’t for you. However, if you just want portability with a good sized hard drive and great battery performance, this one’s for you. Booting up in ANDROID is super fast, a matter of seconds and you are off surfing the web.

“Nice little device” 2010-01-09
By Mr. Scott (The South)
I was pleasantly surprised about the Android part of the computer after reading various reviews. I have had no glitches with it to date, after using it for over a week now anyway. It boots up fast, gets online fast and can get e-mail fast.

There is a website, like another reviewer wrote, that is dedicated to the Android netbook market. They have almost 90 Apps now, and all are FREE as of now. The website is [...]. I have downloaded several already. The language app works much better than I expected, it gives fairly accurate translations. There are a couple I downloaded that did not work right, however, but all the other did. The secret to getting the apps is to use the built in browser, NOT firefox to download the apps. You have to press the right mouse button (right side of the acer single button) to be able to select “go” to type in the address.

The XP part works as expected, better than any other windows I have tried. I have not tried 7 yet though.

I love the compact Acer, I do not like large laptops after owning 2 of these now (dropped the first on a tiled cement floor). It is very light with extremely long battery life.

I would suggest an external dvd drive for loading certain programs, such as your printer software among others. Other than that it is a great little computer.

What is the best comparison shopping search engine, Google, Yahoo!? It depends, and often neither. These mighty search engines can only do so much with the enormous amount of information on the Net. Comparison shopping search engines often perform better as they are devoted to retailers, products, prices, and savings. Following is a list of the arguably best shopping search engines for quality merchandise, bottom-line pricing, product reviews, and, best of all, money-saving coupons and offers.

Yahoo! Shopping vs. Froogle: Yahoo’s comparison shopping search engine offers a somewhat superior selection of vendors, extensive product ratings, and reviews. Google’s comparison shopping search engine, Froogle, is useful if you want to include eBay listings, search by zip code, or include physical maps of a store.

Both comparison shopping search engines are a bit cumbersome to navigate so sans eBay listings, Yahoo! comes out ahead. Include these two sites in your shopping arsenal, but know better alternatives exist.

Save Money Comparison Shopping, Online Deals

ShopLocal.com: Hidden gem for savings, find local sales as well as online deals. Useful features include the ability to browse store flyers and sales ads online, and both average and higher-end retailers maintain listings here. This comparison shopping search engine is very easy to use. Simply enter a zip code and find sales galore.

Edeals.com: Popular shopping search engine designed for finding online coupons and coupon codes. Edeals primarily caters to a limited selection of popular retailers. Shop by store, category, or keyword, and find discounts from Dell, Target, Wal-Mart, Overstock.com, and several other vendors.

Price Comparison Shopping Engines

Shopzilla.com: Leading destination in comparison shopping search engines maintains information on over 30 million products and 90,000 stores. The Web site’s best feature is pricing followed by navigation. Shopzilla owns Bizrate so save time by using this broader search engine.

Search through a number of categories, including clothes, home and garden, computers, jewelry and more, even free cell phones. Then easily refine your search with options on the left menu, (great for computer shopping), and sort results by price or relevance. Finished results from this comparison shopping search engine are clear and useful, providing vendor ratings, shipping information and a highlighted best price.

PriceGrabber.com: Don’t be surprised by shipping costs with PriceGrabber. This site calculates bottom-line, with shipping, pricing. This comparison shopping search engine, like Shopzilla, is highly functional and easy to navigate. While searching for an “Acer Aspire” the results included several substantially lower-priced Acer’s than Shopzilla. However, when searching for a particular model, 3690, the pricing was the same, save for a refurbished model. PriceGrabber includes decent computer outlets, such as TigerDirect, but not as many vendors overall as does Shopzilla.

Shopping.com: Popular, easy-to-use comparison shopping site offering information on many brand names. The downside is the inclusion of several unknown vendors. If you are comfortable and somewhat well-informed with this type of shopping, buying from individuals and unfamiliar places, it is a worthwhile stop for finding the best price.

Buy.com: Bells and whistles galore, designed for those who love to shop. Excellent graphics, shopping guide (Guidester’s Recommendations), suggested keywords, Buy TV, and Top 10 lists offer shopping guidance. You may not find the best price at this comparison shopping site, but you’ll find a good approximation and plenty of useful information.

Niche Comparison Shopping

Products with millions of selections, such as books, deserve there own category for comparison shopping, and computer shopping is an education in itself. Additionally, several other products, from autos to music, benefit from niche’ shopping searches. Though limited, deserving a separate article, here are a few niche comparison shopping sites to supplement the general comparison shopping search engines.

Computers:

Cnet.com, PCMag.com, Computershopper.com

Books:

(Used) Bookfinder.com (over 125 million books, several vendors), AbeBooks.com

(New or used) Books.google.com (search full text), Amazon.com, Froogle.com (shines on books)

About Comparison Shopping Online

No need to visit several sites to comparison shop, at least not as many as one would think. These mega comparison shopping search engines cover multiple retailers and vendors and often perform better than the general search engines. Lastly, when shopping online, consider these tips:

*Verify vendor’s reputation
*Consider shipping costs and taxes
*Ensure pricing is bottom-line
*Note if price quote is rebate-based
*Use more than one shopping search engine
*Review return policy
*Check out warranties

I take it with me to the library every time I go so I can access the wireless network on my own machine, plus I’ve taken it on vacation because it’s so portable. Plus, I do all of my graduate school work on this little machine. It still boots quickly and is able to run multiple applications at once. My favorite aspects of this computer are its portability, decent battery life, and the cute pink color.
Customer Review: Great little machine
Better performer than I was expecting. Only one problem. The memory card reader came not working for Sony memory sticks. It worked for the other formats, just not that one. Annoying, but not a deal breaker.
